Chilika Lake - What is there? Why should you explore?

Let me tell you, nothing prepared me for how peaceful and magical Chilika Lake is. I have heard bits and pieces – about Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, the dolphins, the birds, the calm boat rides. But when I visited to see this, especially around Satapada, it was something else that you never Imagine!.

Chilika is located near the coastal town of Puri, spread over several districts of Odisha moreover Puri to Ganjam. It is a lake, where People knows is the home of Irrawaddy dolphins and migratory birds. Yes, that’s true. But there’s something more beyond your  imagination –  the vibe, the food, and the sunrises. It is something that feels amazing.

And if you’re coming from Puri, the drive is hardly 1.5 hours. Locals often plan a day trip, but trust me, stay back if you can.

How to Reach Chilika From Puri, Bhubaneswar, and from major cities?

  • From Puri: Easiest route. I took a cab from Puri to Satapada. Roads are smooth, and the scenery keeps you company. Buses also run.
  • From Bhubaneswar: Around 110 km. Drive down via NH316. Trains to Puri are frequent, then you can hire a taxi.
  • By Train: Puri Railway Station is the most convenient station for your starting place.
  • By Air: By Air option, Bhubaneswar Airport will be chosen as the best option.

Best Things to Do in Chilika

  • Dolphin Watching in Satapada

This was the main reason I came. The Irrawaddy dolphins! Small groups of us sat on the boat, eyes fixed on the water. Suddenly, there they were – playful, fast, and absolutely beautiful.

Book your ride early in the morning or late afternoon. Not the entire lake you can see the Dolphins, Where to go only the boatman knows the place at Chilika, Satapada. You can easily spot them near the lake mouth. And trust me, it’s a memory you won’t forget in your entire life. The way they swim, jump, and play that will be totally Unforgettable.

  • Mangalajodi – A Bird watching place

Mangalajodi is something special, if you’re into birds, or not! You may see Thousands of migratory birds gather here, in the time between November to February. Flamingos, herons, egrets – it’s like a moving painting.

Bring binoculars if you can. Or just sit back and take it in your camera.

  • Rajhans Island & Boating Tours

One of the most peaceful stretches of sand I’ve walked. This Island is located near the meeting point of the lake and bay of Bengal. By boat, It takes around 45 minutes from Satapada. On the way, you can see little fish boats, small &  Narrow Islands, and even some dolphins.
You can step out, click a few pictures, grab chai from a shack, and breathe.
